Impacts of Peak‐Flow Events on Hyporheic Denitrification Potential

چکیده

Subsurface flows, particularly hyporheic exchange fluxes, driven by streambed topography, permeability, channel gradient and dynamic flow conditions provide prominent ecological services such as nitrate removal from streams aquifers. Stream dynamics cause strongly nonlinear often episodic contributions of nutrient concentrations in river-aquifer systems. Using a fully coupled transient reactive transport model, we investigated the denitrification potential zones during peak-flow events. The effects bedform amplitude on spatio-temporal distribution dissolved organic carbon streambeds associated were explored. Distinct events with different intensity, duration hydrograph shape selected to represent wide range scenarios. Our results indicated that specific hydrodynamic characteristics individual largely determine average positive or negative capacity zones, however magnitude this is controlled geomorphological settings (i.e. slope, permeability amplitude). Specifically, longer higher intensity shown promote efficiency scenarios slope values. These are essential for better assessment subsurface under influence order tailored solutions effective restoration interconnected

The potential impacts of climate variability and change on health impacts of extreme weather events in the United States.

Extreme weather events such as precipitation extremes and severe storms cause hundreds of deaths and injuries annually in the United States. Climate change may alter the frequency, timing, intensity, and duration of these events. Increases in heavy precipitation have occurred over the past century. Future climate scenarios show likely increases in the frequency of extreme precipitation events, ...

Potential impacts of CF3I on ozone

Iodotrifluoromethane (CF 3 I) has been considered to be a candidate replacement for bromotrifluoromethane (CF 3 Br), which is used in aircraft for fuel inerting and for fire fighting. In this study, the chemical effects of aircraft-released CF 3 I on atmospheric ozone were examined with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 5 two-dimensional chemical-radiative-transport (UIUC 2-D CRT) ...

Potential Impacts of Nanoparticles on Water Reclamation

Nanotechnology is an emerging technology that could impact a wide range of industries in the near future. Nanotechnology involves production and use of extremely small particles (1 – 100 nm size scale), wherein the particle synthesis is controlled or manipulated at the molecular level (1). The nanoparticles are often used for industrial/commercial applications due to their extremely high reacti...

Impacts Of Hillslope And Floodplain Characteristics On Groundwater Dynamics: Implications For Riparian Denitrification

One of the beneficial roles of riparian buffers is the capacity to attenuate groundwater nitrate before it can discharge to streams. Denitrification is one of the most important processes that permanently removes nitrate from groundwater; it requires anoxic conditions, a carbon source, and a suitable residence time as the reaction is microbially mediated. As denitrification rates are highly dep...
